Dr. Daniel Ragsdale Appears on KBTX to Discuss Spam Phone Calls

September 21, 2018

The future of spam and scam phone calls

A new report from a private company suggests that by 2019, nearly half of all calls to cellphones will be scam calls.

Dr. Ragsdale on KBTX

First Orion, a company that provides phone carriers and their customers with caller ID and call-blocking technology, released the report.

The director of the Texas A&M Cybersecurity Center, Daniel Ragsdale, says the company’s retail interests may mean the report isn’t entirely reliable.

“I think ‘half’ is a big overstatement,” said Ragsdale. “Of course, that doesn’t mean this isn’t a problem, and a growing one.”

The solution is multi-part, according to Ragsdale. He says phone service companies, app developers, and law enforcement agencies are all working to cut down on the negative scam calls you receive.

Still, Ragsdale cites ‘community’ as the greatest resource.

“Neighbors will warn neighbors of numbers to look out for, scams to beware of,” said Ragsdale. Law enforcement and local media can be a part of the solution, too.
